Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a clear, non-hazardous, and non-flammable solution. If it comes into contact with the skin, it can be easily rinsed off with water. However, DEF is sensitive to chemical impurities, making careful handling essential to prevent contamination. Notably, DEF is more susceptible to damage from the materials it encounters than it is likely to harm any equipment.
Contaminated DEF can lead to malfunctions within the SCR system. As such, it is critical that pumps and containers designated for DEF are never repurposed for other fluids. Tanks, pumps, hoses, and nozzles that have previously handled substances like diesel or lubricating oil must be kept entirely separate from DEF. Adhering to these unique handling requirements prevents contamination and safeguards system performance.
The shelf life of DEF is approximately two years when the fluid temperature is maintained between 12°F (-10°C) and 86°F (30°C). For outdoor storage in bulk tanks or totes, effective heating and cooling solutions can help maintain the optimal temperature range. Generally, cooling is achieved through insulation and ventilation, eliminating the need for air conditioning.
The third part of the ISO 2224 standard outlines essential recommendations and requirements for the handling, transporting, and storing of DEF. Suitable materials for DEF storage include specific stainless steels and various plastics, while carbon steels, copper, copper-containing alloys, and zinc-coated steels should be avoided. For a comprehensive list of appropriate and inappropriate equipment and materials, please contact Cuyahoga Landmark.
DEF consumption is measured as a ratio of diesel fuel use, normally termed the “dosing rate” or “treat rate.” Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles have a dosing rate of 2-3%. If your truck has a fuel efficiency of six miles per gallon and a dosing rate of 3%, it will use approximately 1 gallon of DEF every 200 miles.
